然后格尔达更大声地呼喊，这时房子里走出一位非常老的妇人，拄着一根拐杖。

她戴着一顶大帽子来遮挡阳光，帽子上画着各种各样美丽的花朵。

Sheworealargehattoshadeherfromthesun，andonitwerepaintedallsortsofprettyflowers。

“你这个可怜的小小孩，”老妇人说，“你是怎么在这么湍急的河流上漂流到这么远的广阔世界来的呢？”

“Youpoorlittlechild，”saidtheoldwoman，“howdidyoumanagetoeallthisdistanceintothewideworldonsucharapidrollingstream?”

然后老妇人走进水里，用她的拐杖抓住船，把船拉到岸边，把格尔达抱了出来。

Andthentheoldwomanwalkedinthewater，seizedtheboatwithhercrutch，drewittoland，andliftedGerdaout。

格尔达很高兴自己站在了干燥的地面上，虽然她有点害怕这位陌生的老妇人。

“过来告诉我你是谁，”她说，“还有你是怎么到这儿来的。”

然后格尔达把一切都告诉了她，老妇人一边听一边摇头，嘴里说着“哼—哼”；

当她说完后，格尔达问她是否见过小凯，老妇人告诉她小凯没有从这条路经过，但他很可能会来。

桌子上放着漂亮的樱桃，格尔达得到允许可以想吃多少就吃多少。

在她吃樱桃的时候，老妇人用一把金梳子梳理她长长的亚麻色卷发，光亮的卷发垂在她那圆圆的、讨人喜欢的小脸两边，这张小脸看起来像玫瑰一样清新、娇艳。

当她继续梳理小格尔达的头发时，格尔达对她的义兄凯的思念越来越少了，因为这个老妇人会魔法，虽然她不是一个邪恶的女巫；

它们立刻就沉入黑暗的泥土里，这样就没人能知道它们曾经生长在哪里了。

老妇人担心如果小格尔达看到玫瑰，就会想起家里的那些，然后就会想起小凯，并且跑掉。
